ABSTRACT

Critical literacy has become a central goal of EFL reading instruction, extending the purposes of reading beyond comprehension to learners’ engagement with representation, identity, ideology, power, and social participation. Although earlier research has advanced critical literacy through a range of instructional models and classroom practices, far less attention has been paid to how the pedagogical knowledge built up in reading strategy instruction (RSI) can inform these broader goals. This conceptual paper therefore reconsiders RSI as a lens for understanding how teachers support learners as those purposes expand. Drawing on research in both fields, it argues that familiar strategic and metacognitive processes can serve critical thinking and critical literacy as well as comprehension once teachers deliberately orient them toward these wider purposes. A classroom vignette and a comparison of six representative processes across reading orientations then illustrate how such a reorientation can work in practice.
