ABSTRACT

As we start research on Korean contemporary composers, we immediately confront with problems. Basically the problems are related to the fundamental standards which a scholar has to choose to judge the value of the composers and their works. The issues and problems are discussed in this paper in six different aspects. The first is the problem of the relevance and the validity of selecting a certain composer as an object of worth writing about. The second is the problem of the artistic value of the works. In this chapter, the general discussion about the artistic value and the case of the composer, Byung Dong Paik are talked over. The third is the problems of style and technique issue. And the fourth is about the problem of periodization of a composer's works. The fifth is the problem of acceptance by the listeners of the period. This criterion is an area which is really hard to discuss because of the rarity of a record and documentation. And the sixth and the last of the problem discussed is about the judgement of the historical value of a composer and his works. The area of studying Korea composers still has a long way to go. However when we set out the first step towards the area, we have to consider the above problems carefully before we write down the first line of the paper on the subject.
