ABSTRACT

In Korean contemporary music, the problem of 'tradition' has been one of the key issues, especially for the composers born in the 1940s, who grew up in social context with the ideology of westernization neglecting own cultural values, and in compositional circumstance of following the western modern music. As a same generation, they have a lot of thoughts and interests in common; nevertheless their work shows many diverse aspects. Focused on the discourse of tradition, this paper examines how the differences have been generated and constituted, by considering it in social context and in individual life of four composers ― Young-Jo Lee (b.1943), Joon-Il Kang (b.1944), Man-Bang Yi (b.1945), Geon-Yong Lee (b.1947).
