ABSTRACT

The forms of Gregorian Chant are divided in 3 categories; outline-given, strophic and commatic. Chants with outlined-given forms are based on simple melodic outlines that can be used with several different Biblical texts, such as chants for Bible readings and psalm tones, formulas for singing psalms in the Office, etc. Strophic forms are Hymns and Sequences. Hymns are strophic consisting of several stanzas that are all sung to the same melody. Most sequences consist of a series of paired sentences or phrases, except an initial and a final sentence. Within each pair, the two sentences or phrases generally have the same number of syllables and are set to same music. Most of the chants, except with outline-given and strophic forms, have commatic forms. Commatic forms are consisted of phrases or segments with free structure. These forms are divided in 3 types based on the principles of composition: original melody, melody-type and centonization. For the analysis of the forms of Gregorian Chant, we have to consider its principles of composition, its function in the liturgy and its relation to melody and text.
