ABSTRACT

This paper will survey recent research about the attempt to use neuroscience to understand music and musical behavior, and examine how deeply this new, emerging field of neuroscience can influence the traditional field of music aesthetics. All of human mental and bodily activities are conceived, played and perceived through the brain. Thus it can not be free from the constraints of our neural systems. Study of the biological base about the musical activities started long time ago in the field of music-physiology and music-psychology. But the emergence of powerful new measurement techniques such as neuroimaging (e.g., fMRI) and electroencephalography allows new methods of approaches to the human mental activities and burgeoning many interdisciplinary fields allied with neuroscience. Neuroesthetics is the one of them. Neuroesthetics, which is proposed by Dr. Semir Zeki, is the new way of the aesthetic studies to examine the neural laws of art and aesthetics. In this article, it will be also reviewed this new research results and examined the prospect of its future.
