ABSTRACT

Bach’s German motet has not yet received scholarly attention in the Korean musicological scene. Part of the reasons of being neglected by scholars has to do with the fact that the genre, the motet, has not been recognised as one of the representative genres written by Bach. This paper discusses Bach’s German motet in terms of the genre, proposing that it was one of the most significant genres that allows the composer to explore the intriguing and intricate interplay between the musical tradition that he inherited and the musical experiment that he newly implemented. After analyzing Bach's motet, this paper argues that Bach’s motet reflects the musical as well as textual conventions of the time. But, at the same time, this paper also illustrates various ways in which Bach responds to the conventions, thereby creating works that are both traditional and inventive.
