AB - The purpose of this paper is to reconsider the issue of the ‘Ideology of German music’ in terms of the identity of German music as one of the national music. In order to achieve this, a historical survey of the origin of this issue is attempted. According to Norbert Elias’ clarification of the historical process concerning “civilization” and “culture,” the confrontation of these two concepts was restricted to the intra-social issues during the eighteenth century. In the nineteenth century, however, this became a international issue between the advanced western countries and German speaking area. The gist is that the about-face of the evaluation of the all things German had been take place during these two centuries.
Bernd Sponheuer mapped out the corresponding process of attributing upside-down value to the German music. He defined the rediscovery of Johann Sebastian Bach’s masterpieces in terms of Gothic in music. During the discourse, the concept of “Sonderweg(special path)” is inevitably evoked. The myth of the superiority of “pure” instrumental music, therefore, is non other than the contention of the superiority of the German nation.
