ABSTRACT

The German music school is a product of the merging of the social democracy and the Singing Movement (part of the German Youth Movement) in the early 20th century. The social democracy originated from the pauperization of the population during the industrial revolution whereas the Singing Movement formed via innovative musical education. The leader of those two movements, both exceptional musicians and educationists, Leo Kestenberg and Fritz Öde, who established the “Democracy of Music,” were from the bourgeoisie. They tried to resolve the cultural indigence and wanted to reduce the divide between rich and poor. Music shouldn’t be the belonging of the upper class but rather be available for the bourgeoisie, too, which was achieved by founding the music school, an institution based on the conservatory for less wealthy citizens realized especially by Kestenberg. In today’s Germany the music school portrays the pursuit of a better quality of living in the German society, while being among the state-run education and the urban promotion of culture.
