Development of Creative Improvisation Training Materials for Beginner Piano Learners

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze the type of improvisation technique in the piano method which is used in Korea and abroad for the young beginners. Based on the literature review, 6 types of music elements and 2 types of teaching methods suitable for improvisation activities for preschoolers or elementary school students were reconstructed. In addition, this study developed and presented the teaching materials for improvisational activities for the beginner piano students using the Korea musical elements. In the conclusion, I suggested that the improvisational activity in the piano lesson needs to be accompanied by theory and technic exercises as well as repertoire and that the group lesson environment is preferable. For the last piano teachers need to diagnose the musical knowledge or skill level inherent in the students so as to develop the effective improvisational learning activities in the piano lesson.
