ABSTRACT

This article deals with the musical theater experiment of the “Institute of Korean Music Theater” founded by the opera director Moon Ho-Geun (1946-2001) in December, 1986. Firstly, this article goes over the collaboration between the director Moon Ho-Geun and the composer Lee Guen-Young (1947- ) and analyzes the Hanguk-eumak theory that was the theoretical background of their musical theater experiment. Also, this paper delves into the characteristics and the development processes of the Noregeuk and Minjok-Gageuk. Lastly, this paper examines the meaning and prospects of the musical theater experiment by the “Institute of Korean Music Theater” in 1980s and 1990s to today.
