ABSTRACT

Database is one of the efficient systems in order to archive data and research information. For valuable information, we should collect and store more authentic data and manage them efficiently. And database must be designed for statistics, analysis, and academical meanings. For music, establishing music-database is an essential research infrastructure for more intense and in-depth researches as well. However, we can find out few music databases in Korea. Among them, EMDB I(Ewha Music Database) and Korea SP Record Archive database are outcomes from short-term projects supported by National Research Foundation of Korea(NRF). And the cases of National Library of Korea, Korea Digital Archives for the Arts: DA-Arts, and Gugak Archive give us a few available searching database for materials belonging to libraries or archives. National institutions have administered their databases but in case of projects’ databases most of them are lack of data management continuously after finishing the projects, so all wait for more supports and countermeasures. We can find out some solutions from the databases built in the U.S. and Europe. Those diverse music databases were established already or are establishing based on clearly targeted objectives, long-time accumulated records and data, and digitalization with computer based system. And they show how important to collaborate and constantly manage music database. Finally this paper examines current situation of music database in Korea and gives some suggestion through cases of Europe and the U.S. with expecting establishing more music databases.
