ABSTRACT

The Korean Band Directors’ Association (KBA), with a 52-years history, represents Korean wind instrument musicians. Founded in 1973, the KBA has promoted wind ensemble music through Korea-Japan exchanges, organized festivals and competitions, and supported school wind bands. This contributed to the growth of Korean wind music circle in quality and quantity. Despite its importance, the early days of the KBA remains relatively unknown due to limited documentation and a weak organizational presence. This study investigates the foundation and early activities of the KBA in the 1970s, based on the oral accounts of senior wind musicians, particularly Young B. Kim, the first secretary general of the KBA. While doing this, I intend to offer insights into the circumstances of wind musicians around the era, as well as an understanding of Korean society half a century ago, through the testimonies of wind musicians.
