ABSTRACT

This article examines Korean Contemporary Composers and Compositions (hereafter OZAK), a semiannual critical journal that serves as a foundational archive for understanding contemporary Korean music. Focusing on issues 9 through 28 following its relaunch, the study explores salient discourses and issues to illuminate key aspects of the Korean music scene in the twenty-first century. As the author has been directly involved with the publication since its inception, the study adopts an autoethnographic approach. By integrating personal experience with academic analysis, it offers a grounded insider’s perspective on how contemporary musical discourse has been shaped. The paper first outlines the formation of the OZAK collective and the journal’s emergence, periodizing its history into two phases. It then analyzes the journal’s four primary sections―“Roundtable,” “Flow and Analysis,” “Composers and Works,” and “On the Spot”― to trace the evolution of the contemporary Korean music scene from 2016 to 2025. The interplay among these sections provides a comprehensive framework that captures the diverse dimensions of the field. Drawing on OZAK’s accumulated archives, the study seeks to elucidate the processes of change and the underlying concerns of music creators within this context.
