ABSTRACT

This thesis is an introduction for the project, “Philosophical Foundations of Probability.” The purpose of this paper is to argue for the theme that if one wants to study probability substantially, one must apply the philosophizing activity onto the subject of probability. To enable us to show a way to the purpose, the default method of philosophy, neither dogmatism nor skepticism, is proposed in this paper. For this study, Carnap's two concepts of probability are selected to be examined, along with the opposite views of Popper's theory and Reichenbach's theory; these studies are re-interpreted to support the theme by the default method of philosophy. If the application of philosophizing devoted to the thorough understanding of probability is accepted, it can then be extended to propose that teaching philosophy is a necessary condition, not only for the education of mathematics, but for the education of all the other sciences as well.
