ABSTRACT

In contrast to the claim that Brentano's view of intentionality is obsolete and even implausible, in this paper the author takes it that the matter as to how we face up to, understand, and interpret Brentano's notion of intentionality significantly determines the basic framework of, and the foundation for, constructing a general theory of aboutness. This amounts to saying that philosophers who want to build a theory of intentionality need to carefully re-examine Brentano's view of intentionality in his own way and perspective. Thus seen the task of the present paper is not to directly judge whether or not Brentano's theory of intentionality is plausible but rather to shed some light on the central tenets of his theory in a critical yet reflexive way, mainly so as to lay the firm basis for building a general theory of intentionality. The author tries to perform the task by means of formulating a group of theoretically crucial questions associated with the famous intentionality passage in Brentano's book Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint.
