ABSTRACT

This paper introduces recent issues and trends of the Cognitivie Science of Religion(CSR) based on theoretical ground of the interdisciplinary cognitive science. I examine some main issues of CSR, such as religious representation and cognitive optimum effect, religious action and ritual, two modes of religiosity and socio-cultural structure. Theoretical trends of CSR and it's implications and weaknesses are as follows: 1. CSR presents some scientific explanations of religion in general. Some cognitive scientists of religion, emphasizing the importance of the Naturalness of Religion Thesis, treat religious representations as by-products of brain activity. From this perspective, a religious concept represented by the process of cognition and action is a minimally counter-intuitive(MCI) one among general concepts. It has not a special differentiated peculiarity. Consequently, CRS is faced with reductionism or naturalistic fallacy that reduces culture to nature. 2. CRS links psychologicual dimension and socio-cultural dimension, thereby making concepts and theories systematically classified and generalized. Human efforts to solve the contradiction between memory and motivation in the process of religious transmission embodies two modes of religiosity. They has their own psychological cognition and socio-cultural structure. However, these hypotheses don't go with historical religious phenomena. 3. CRS in the making is a relatively Christianity-centric model. It is not adequate for explaining non-Christian religions. It's tendency should be modified. 4. Religion is a sort of dynamic feedback system which consists of mind, body, socio-cultural circumstance. This holistic viewpoint will make a great contribution towards more desirable growth of CRS in the future.
