AB - 양명학은 기본적으로 주자학에 대한 반동이라는 성격을 갖는다. 그것은 비록 주자학이라는 밭에서 자라났지만 맹자학孟子學이라는 씨앗이 발아하여 나온 유가의 도덕철학이다. 주자학이라는 토양에서 자랐기 때문에, ꡔ대학ꡕ의 논리구조와 ‘존천리거인욕存天理去人欲’이라는 명제 등을 받아들였다. 그러나 사실 그것을 이용하여 주자학에 반대하는 이론인 ‘심즉리’ ‘치양지’설 등을 제시하였고, 이를 통해 적통 유학자들의 도덕철학이 보다 더 분명하게 설명되었다. 그것을 우리는 주체의 ‘자기입법’이요 ‘자율도덕’이라고 부를 수 있고, 그 체계에서 건립된 세계는 ‘가치세계’라고 이름할 수 있다.
그러나 양명은 지나치게 주체의 창발성만을 강조하여 주체와 상관없이 독립적으로 존재하는 천지만물, 즉 객관세계를 등한시했다. 그 결과, 비록 도덕실천의 근거와 법칙이 어떻게 정현되는지에 대해서는 분명하고 강력한 설명이 이루어졌지만, 실제로 그것을 실천하는 방법론에 있어서는 문제를 노정했다. 또한 우리의 세계를 ‘가치세계’로만 국한시킴으로 인해서, 현상세계 혹은 객관세계를 탐구할 수 있는 심의 또 다른 능력, 즉 이론이성적 측면을 간과하여 이른바 과학적 학문의 발전이 근본적으로 저지당하고, 나아가 그런 이론이성적 판단에 주로 의지하는 민주정체의 뿌리를 내리는 데도 어려움을 초래할 수도 있다.
