AB - In this article life and scholarly attainments of Gwon Chunlan is researched. A Confucian scholar, Gwon was a student of Gu Bonglyong who was a famous Confucian scholar and student of Yi Hwang. Therefore Gwon’s learning naturally consisted of Dohak(道學) and Simhak(心學) that belonged to the context of Yi and Gu’s academic research, and he is the author of Jinhakdo(進學圖), that was edited with 26 diagrams and explanations about promotion of Confucian learning. Any evaluation on his work and its meaning has not been tried. So this article tries to research his life and scholarly attainments as the background for understanding this work.
Explanation of his life is divided into three parts, getting his education from Gu and Yi, entering the government service, and cultivation and full growth of his learning by writing and editing books. The main source of research of his life is from the records about his life and his family. The decisive mentor of his life must be Gu, his teacher. This fact is cleared up from the many records on the collection of Gu’ works. And finally his viewpoint of Confucianism related to the work, Jinhakdo, is inquired. Jinhakdo is a result of his pursuit of Confucian moral self cultivation for a long time and so informs a systematic approach to the methods of the self cultivation. It seems to succeed to the famous work of Yi, the Ten diagrams of Sage Learning, but it shows more advanced system of Sage learning. And what is important is that his achievement of this work is not only the result of succeeding to Yi’s context but also of Gu’s independent teaching from Yi’s. The future research must aim at explanation of the context from Gu to Gwon as the third one in Yi’s academic circle, and a systematic research of Jinhakdo from the viewpoint of a kind of an iconography.
