ABSTRACT

This article aims at looking for a methodology to make a new discussion about the human mind from a viewpoint synthesized with already established theories and plus the context of East Asian traditional understandings of mind. In reflecting that in Korean academic circles the number of connecting theories of traditional Confucian mind learning to studies of cognitive science or psychology has been small and in Humanities area it is few times that studies of mind from the viewpoints of philosophy or psychology have met with ones from other fields, this article argues that the range of studying the mind must be broadened and synthesize various viewpoints of mind studies into a more comprehensive system. This mind study using the comparative humanities methodology has two targets; the one is to make the humanities the main axis of this interdisciplinary studies, and the other to push the traditional context of Confucian mind-learning on the right track of the contemporary context of mind studies. This mind study has not finished its formulation of its system and methodology, so that it will be difficult to discuss more details. However it will be possible to explain more details with more examples of study experience and established facts by the methodology of this. It will be expected by this study as follow: the first is establishment of the comparative Humanities on the authority of the mind understanding system of Confucianism, the second is to establish a theoretical basement that makes such an comprehensive or integrated methods to be reproduced infinitely in accordance with the changing context. And the last is to promote succeeding studies by the means of developing a mind model integrating theoria and praxis that will be able to be applied to the field of education and social life. To maximize the suitability of the humanities of this mind study must be the reason why this mind study will be asked.
