ABSTRACT

Allen's book, Max Weber : a critical introduction, was translated as Korean in 2010. In the book, Allen debunks hidden sides of M. Weber who is one of the most influential sociologists. Most of all, he explains Weber's intellectual concerns including methodological view, political theory even religious works. He, also, tries to criticize an conservative side of sociology in the book. He thinks that Max Weber's studies are exemplified in conservative sociology. What I try to do in this paper is to confront Allen’s interpretation of Max Weber. While his attempt is ambitious, his ideas about Weber's study are not relevant. First, according to Allen, Weber is regarded as an imperialist. However, a lot of researchers who have studied M. Weber do not agree with his idea and also Weber does not consent to imperialism of German based on militarism. In addition, It is not a proper idea that Weber's ‘value free’(Wertfreiheit) could be understood as super-temporal or transcendental. Lastly, his religious view also has lots of biases. Especially, Allen misunderstands Weber's religious studies. He argues Weber's religious studies include superiority of Western culture. Weber's studies, however, have little superiority of western culture. Rather, Weber wants to compare the Western culture or lifestyle of Western with Oriental cultural area. In conclusion, the Max Weber : a critical introduction has not only lots of controversies but also defects.
