ABSTRACT

This study is an essay for re-organizing Zhu Xi’s Confucianism as so-called Wi-gi-ji-hak(爲己之學) which had completely changed the whole system or structure of Confucian learning and established a new design of comprehensive methodology for becoming a perfect being like Confucius by self-organization. Wi-gi-ji-hak has not been inquired philosophically inside or outside of contemporary Korea. The substance of his Confucian self-organizing methodology is considered in this study. This article mainly consists of three chapters except introduction and conclusion. In the first chapter, the process of conceptualization of the methodology as Wi-gi-ji-hak(in Chineses Weijizhixue) from pre-Qin era to Early Song Dynasty and his acceptance and centralization of the methodology in his whole learning of Confucianism are elucidated. In the second chapter his principle of the methodology is analyzed into three main ideas; design of long term process of self-organization based on the first-person methodology, synthetic and integrated systematization of learning of Confucius, and transformation of Confucianism into a new learning which stresses as its main target on embodiment of Confucian life and teachings and actual effect. The most stressed thing in this article is that his methodology In the last chapter the interrelationship between the methodology and Zhi Xi’s whole Confucianism is counted and the direction of research of his methodology hereafter is considered. The interrelationship is firstly elucidated that his establishment of four-book system is necessarily connected to the systematization of the methodology. Secondly it is that the Wi-gi-ji-hak aims at forming a consistency on a person’s life by integrating and unifying the whole activities of mind and body on the standard of Confucian proprieties. Finally it is that the effect of practice of the methodology should be explained as an accumulation effect, which means that repetition of learning and practice makes an important result in improvement of the character of the person directly concerned and ultimately in being highly proficient in mastery of Confucian teaching and principles. Therefore follow-up studies on the details of the methodology should be necessary.
