AB - This study is a kind of the humanistic research for raising possibility of intercultural understanding and practice not only in Korean society but also in other societies. The meaning of the intercultural understanding in this study keeps a request for transformation of one’s attitude or even direction of life toward communication with approval of other’s culture and toward a more comprehensive context of culture.
The main method of this study is to seek for improvement of the power of execution based on claiming of recent research findings on mind. The conceptual range of the mind in this study covers from the explicit level which is captured by the consciousness of an individual to the implicit which cannot be captured by the consciousness. And the implicit area involves the concepts of micro-identities and micro-worlds which are developed in the cognitive science.
The main discussions are as follow. Firstly, the reason why the humanistic research on the mind should be necessary for the extension of the intercultural understanding and practice is discussed. Secondly, the concept of true knowledge, a similar meaning with the embodied knowledge in the cognitive science, which has been emphasized in the tradition of Neo-Confucianism is discussed with its effectiveness for improvement of executive power of the intercultural practice. In addition the cognitive scientific theory of the embodied mind and the research findings from the researches about the ritual are combined with the mind and the true knowledge.
Except introduction it consists of five chapters. The first chapter is problem posing on the improvement of intercultural understanding. The second, the interrelationship between the intercultural understnading and studies on mind. The third, importance of understanding of understanding by a method of comparison of the differences between each understanding of mind. The fourth, mind and life---range from the micro-identities to social system. The final, practical methods.
The direction of this discussion is focusing on how to share the ethics for co-existence. The conclusion focuses on renovation of our routine in accordance with the intercultural understanding by the reconstruction of present ritual system and by the practice of the reconstructed rituals.
