ABSTRACT

The fundamental aim of the paper is to examine the notion of ‘critical phronêsis’ in contemporary context, which played a crucial role in Paul Ricoeur’s later ethico-political philosophy. One of the most important premises in Ricoeur’s ethico-political philosophy is the priority of the good over the moral or the teleological point of view over the deontological one. This claim has been regarded as an attempt to revive Aristotelian Ethics which has been dominated in contemporary ethical life. But it seems to be unclear what critical phronêsis is and why Aristotelian ethics should be combined with both Kant and Hegelian ethical points of views which is founded upon the rule of universal law. One of the aims in my paper is to ilustrate Ricoeur's conception of critical phronêsis in a clearer way. In do so, I shall argue that there is a new kind of conflict in the application of universal laws to the real world. To resolve conflict critical phronêsis is called upon in Ricoeur’s philosophy. I shall contend, further, that critical phronêsis is very similar to political disputes what are searching for the political good. In this sense, critical phronêsis will be worked upon at the level to transmit cultural heritage.
