ABSTRACT

In this article I reviewed Cheong Yakyong(丁若鏞)’s Yaobian(爻變) theory in comparison with Lai Zhide(來知德)’s Yaobian theory. Tasan’s theory of interpretation of Zhouyi(Book of Changes) is Yilisifa(易理四法, Four methods of interpretation of Zhou yi), that is, Tuiyi(推移, Hexagrams transformation), Wuxiang(物象, Image of things), Huti(互體, Interlocked body), Yaobian. Lai Zhide’s theories of interpretation of Zhouyi are Quxiang(取象), Cuozong(錯綜), Yaobian(爻變), Zhongyao(中爻). Cheong Yakyong’s Yaobian theory and Lai Zhide’s Yaobian theory are similar in the essential part. But Both theories are different in the specific applications. Cheong Yakyong’s Yaobian theory is a Biangua(變卦)-oriented, but Lai Zhide’s Yaobian theory is a Bianxiang(變象)-oriented. Thus I think that the Biangua-oriented theory is a creative feature of Tasan’s Yaobian theory.
