ABSTRACT

Pascal’s educational thought can be summarized into three main points. First, the first notion of education’s purpose is in forming a ‘gentleman’(honnête homme). This kind of perspective may also be the important objective of the modern education. Secondly, educational methodology is a technique of persuasion. In Pascal’s discussion on the art of persuasion, he distinguishes the method of convincing with the method of pleasing. According to Pascal, the former method is a logical persuasion while the latter method is a persuasion of the heart. In fact, the latter method is a more effective method than the former method. Thirdly, the Pascal’s core point of his philosophy of education is in the Christian education. There are limitations in forming a gentleman and in using the persuasion methods because these kinds of attempts cannot alter the depraved human nature. The education that can transform the hearts of people can only be accomplished through faith on the supernatural revelation. Therefore, according to Pascal, the true education must be based on the Christian education.
