ABSTRACT

Today, not only the international society but also Korean society is dominated by great conflicts. Although communication is emphasized by means of conflict resolution, it is not suggested as a total measure about what ability the speaker needs to communicate well. Wrong ways of communication are deepening conflicts. The purpose of this study is to explore communication from the ethos perspective of rhetoric. As a study of persuasion and communication, rhetoric emphasizes Logos, Etos, and Patos as a means of persuasion. Aristotle says that the most powerful means of persuasion is the ethos. Ethos is a character that should be equipped, or at least possessed, to gain confidence as a speaker in persuasion, phronesis, arete, eunoi’a. However, these three things are not covered in detail Aristotle’s <rhetoric>, and their meaning is also confusing. This paper analyzes their concrete meaning. To this end, this essay compares with arete and phronesis presented in his other work, <Nicomachen Ethics>. Finally, this article presents the virtues that the speaker should have from the viewpoint of the ethos as the intellectual in Korean society.
