ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to illuminate the problem of practical rationality by explaining human irrational action through philosophical insights on emotion. In Chapter 1 of this paper, I try to find a new model challenging the traditional model of the problem of Akrasia in 'perceptual theory' of emotions and to show the problems and limitations of these models. After focusing on epistemological inquiry into the rationality of emotions and behavior in Chapter 1, I attempt a metaphysical approach as the central theme of this paper in Chapter 2. To do this, I apply the theory of dispositional analysts, which compare value to color perception, to the problem of rationality of action, and examine whether this theory can explain our problem, Akrasia. I analyze the meaning of “merit” which is the source of normativity or rationality and raise a problem. Finally, I raise a problem of the analogy between the color perception and value, and find the alternative in Hume 's convention theory.
