AB - Jerry Fodor and Ernest Lepore argue that conceptual role semantics can not distinguish between meaning-constitute inferences and non meaning-constitute ones, so we can not explain semantic compositionality that we expect from appropriate semantic theories. They also point out that conceptual role semantics inevitably leads to semantic instability. Lee Byeong-deok, a proponent of inferentialist semantics, claims to be able to escape the criticism using Wilfred Sellars's concept of counterfactual robustness. I do not agree with the claim that the concept of counterfactual robustness can solve the problem raised. Instead, I argue that the transformation of the viewpoint of communication based on the Inferential theory of meaning is the right way to deal with this problem.
