ABSTRACT

It is fair to say that there is a shared common understanding among the philosophers studying the topic of toleration of what is the descriptive features of the practice of toleration. That is to say that there is a common understanding of what is the characteristics of the practice of toleration, and of what actions we call them as the examples of toleration. Concurrently, however, there is an intriguing fact that there is a lack of common understanding of what is the legitimate motive justifying the practices of toleration; we know what is a practice of toleration, yet we don't have any shared understanding of by what motive a practice of toleration can be actualized. This is a serious obstacle for defining a universal concept of toleration as the task for establishing the universal concept of toleration inevitably requires the presence of a commonly shared understanding of motive for toleration. Thus, every philosophical labor intending to deduce a universal concept of toleration necessarily needs to present the answer for what strategy it will be used in dealing with the problem of the lack of common understanding of the motive. This article hopes to deliver one solution to this problem by suggesting a specific way of approaching the topic; analysis of structural characteristics of toleration. Close analysis of the structural characteristics of toleration reveals several noteworthy knowledges of toleration, which I believe not has been received proper attention. As a result, the analysis will deliver an answer to the possibility of a universal concept of toleration.
