ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it explains moral sense theory of Shaftesbury and Francis Hutcheson more closely, which is a little unfamiliar to us. Secondly it shows what the role of reason in their moral sense theories are. In the modern period, act-centered normative ethics based on reason was the mainstream of the ethics. Probably, Shaftesbury and Hutcheson were the first philosophers who try to establish virtue-centered ethics based on an affective factor in the modern period. However, they could not complete their theory without help of reason. It is maybe because they are still under the influence of the modern period.
