AB - The notion of grounding has recently received a lot of philosophical attention in analytic metaphysics. Many philosophers who defend this notion have appealed to the notion of metaphysical explanation to explicate this somewhat mysterious notion. In this paper, I examine N. Thompson’s critique of this effort. I will argue that her criticism is based on a misunderstanding of the status of pragmatic dimension of explanatory relation. According to my theory of the structure of explanatory relation, the pragmatic nature of explanation is perfectly compatible with the objectivity of grounding.
