ABSTRACT

Cha, Kyung-ae. 2002. A Study of Immersion Model through Content-Based Instruction. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea, 10(2). This paper reports the observational study of Korean kindergarten classes using an early total immersion program based on content-based instruction and integrated-skill approach. Six- and seven-year old kindergarteners' language development data were gathered through native English teachers' oral production reports and the researcher's classroom observation. The result of students' oral production reveals the influence of meaningful input and interaction with teachers. It also shows the importance of early exposure to English education in foreign students for effective language acquisition. A modified version of the immersion model based on Goldstein and Liu (1994)'s "The Hong Kong Model" is proposed to achieve more efficient ways of implementing immersion programs in Korean contexts.
