ABSTRACT

Recently, student-centered learning is one of the most discussed learning styles. Therefore, lots of studies have done about the positive effects of cooperative learning and student self-assessment activities. However, the role of teachers in student self-assessment is an area that still needs more investigation. This study investigates the effect of teachers’ comments on the students’ self-assessment by self-reflection sheets while students are engaged in cooperative learning. Students were asked to have discussions, and after these discussions students filled in the self-reflection sheets and teachers wrote comments on these sheets. In the next lesson, students checked the comments before starting the next discussion. As a result, this paper shows some examples of the students’ improved performance and how teacher comments were able to facilitate students’ improvement in Japanese conversation.
