ABSTRACT

A Extraction and Tendency Analysis of Chinese-derived Words in Korean-Language & Japanese-Language Dictionary Shin, Min-Chul A study, which aims to find a general tendency, similarities & differences, a correlation, etc. of Chinese-derived words between Korean and Japanese Language, is in progress. As an intermediate stage of this study, in this paper, it is completed to extract Chinese-derived words in the whole Korean-Language & Japanese-Language Dictionary. As a result, 23,678 words of Sino-Korean and 31,622 words of Sino-Japanese were extracted. After classifying these Chinese-derived words into those in both anguages, those only in Korean, and those only in Japanese, we analyzed how many Chinese characters are used in composing Chinese-derived words. The result was that Chinese-derived words composed of 2 Chinese characters have the highest percentage as a whole, for that is the basic pattern of Chinese-derived words in both Korean and Japanese. And a number of 3 and 4 Chinese-character words are derivatives or compound words by secondary combination of 2 Chinese-character words. And also a number of distinctive Chinese-derived words in each language were identified in case of 5, 6 and more Chinese-character words. Whereas 3 Chinese-character words had about the same percentage of 2 Chinese-character words in Chinese-derived words only in Korean. It is the main reason that Korean-Language Dictionary, contrary to Japanese-Language Dictionary, contains derivatives or compound words as an entry widely. In future studies, we should take this into account when classifying Chinese-derived words. Also we need to consider not only form but various aspects of Chinese-derived words, such as meaning, parts of speech, meaning field, etc. for more objective and accurate comparative analysis.
