ABSTRACT

“Ruizyuzatsuyosyou” is a Yusokukozitsu of the Heian period that allows one to understand the specific appearance of the Daikyo table menu, seat arrangement, and the Chyodo of Daikyo because it contains Sashizu, which is a drawing created using only lines, along with textual records. This study focused on the “spoon” technique of “Ruizyuzatsuyosyo” to understand spoon culture in the Heian period. Consequently, the study elucidated the position of spoon culture as follows. First, the study found that spoons were used when people mixed rice with soup. Accordingly, the study concludes that this is an important piece of evidence to consider the eating styles of the Japanese. Second, this study proposes an interpretation of the significance of setting “Sonzya” during a ritual named Daikyo through the “Sonzyanousikai” dining table. Third, This study concludes that information on the appearance and dimension of the spoon from the “Ruizyuzatsuyosyou” is valuable data to include in the cultural history of the spoon that links “Engisiki” and “Tyujiruiki.”
