ABSTRACT

This study examined the aptitude of educational material in "Zen-itsu Dojin", written by AMENOMORI, Hoshu. We analyzed two aspects: the concrete meaning of "Cultivate the Mind (「其心をやしな」う)", and the holistic contents of "Zen-itsu Dojin". The results are as follows. The concrete meaning of "Cultivate the Mind (「其心をやしな」う)" is training officers for Korean-Japanese translation by familiarizing them with Confucian morals; they must understand the difference in contents of Confucian morals in Chinese books and the Japanese people's comprehension; "Zen-itsu Dojin" was written for this purpose. The reason for selecting "Quan cheng gushi(勧懲故事)", created during Ming dynasty, as the source book of "Zen-itsu Dojin", and not "Haengshil-do" series of book for indoctrination(行実図系教化書), created during Joseon Dynasty, was to capture students' interest. This evinces that Korea and Japan differ greatly in the cultural dimension regarding Confucianism.
