ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study examined the immediate effects of a single-session health education lecture led by Korean medicine doctors for older adults, focusing on constitutional medicine. Methods: We conducted a retrospective secondary analysis of anonymous quality-improvement surveys collected before and after a 60-minute lecture delivered in a real-world community setting at a senior community center in Wonju, Republic of Korea. Because responses were anonymous and could not be paired, pre- and post-lecture data were analyzed as independent (unpaired) samples. Outcomes included interest in health management, perceived knowledge, awareness of constitutional type in Korean medicine (Sasang type), perceived usefulness of constitution-based self-care, self-efficacy, and attitude toward Korean medicine, rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Composite indices were calculated for knowledge, attitude, and extended attitude. Between-group comparisons used Welch’s t-test and Fisher’s exact test (two-sided α=0.05). Results: A total of 64 participants completed the pre-lecture survey and 69 completed the post-lecture survey. Post-lecture mean scores were higher across most outcomes compared with pre-lecture values. Significant improvements were observed in perceived usefulness of constitution-based self-care (3.73±1.18 vs. 4.37±0.99, p=0.001) and favorable attitude toward Korean medicine (3.48±1.19 vs. 3.90±1.14, p=0.042). The attitude index (3.61±0.96 vs. 4.16±0.89, p=0.001) and extended attitude index (3.75±0.97 vs. 4.24±0.80, p=0.002) also increased significantly. Post-lecture satisfaction was high (4.24±0.86), with strong intention to attend future programs (3.98±0.89). Conclusions: A single-session constitution-focused health education led by Korean medicine doctors may immediately improve attitudes and acceptability of constitution-based self-care among older adults in community settings.
