ABSTRACT

Objectives: Koreans who migrated to Hawaii in the 1930s made and performed a new play called "Lotus Bud" by adapting "Hong Gil-dong jeon". This article discusses the adaptation process and characteristics of the original work. Methods: Making a new play called "Lotus Bud" in "Hong Gil-dong jeon", notable characteristics are shown in Act 1 in terms of imprisonment motifs and escape motives, the emergence and confrontation of Elhan as a new father in Act 2, active creation of a hostile figure, the totalization of love motifs, reinforcement of realism, and succession of the divine reason. Conclusions: "Lotus Bud" is a text that accepts the motifs and settings of "Hong Gil-dong jeon" while coordinating them to fit the environment and disposition of Hawaiian immigrants, and through this, the difference in artist consciousness that appears in the process of adaptation can be confirmed. The purpose of this study is to identify these differences and to subdivide and organize the causes.
