AB - Objectives: This study examines the historical development of the “Gangneung Dialect Contest,” which began in 1994 under the sponsorship of Kangwon Ilbo. It explores the contest’s role in preserving and transmitting the Gangneung dialect and its cultural significance. The research aims to reveal its linguistic and heritage value within the context of regional cultural preservation.
Methods: The study used documentary analysis and in-depth interviews with the organizer and the first winner. It verified the correct inaugural year as 1994 and traced the contest’s influence on founding the Gangneung Dialect Preservation Society. This organization contributed to research, publications, and the contest’s continued growth.
Conclusions: The contest has evolved with social change, adding multicultural categories and online formats. It now serves as a platform connecting generations through social and historical narratives. This study provides the first systematic record and suggests digital archiving for sustainable preservation.
