ABSTRACT

Objectives: The K-Culture drama “The Lonely and Splendid God–Goblin” is mainly evaluated as a work dealing with romantic love using fantasy genre grammar. However, this drama does not only deal with love between men and women, but also reveals the permanence of class and the deification of capital through the motifs of “reincarnation/ immortality” and “superpower.” The purpose of this article is to examine the problem of social inequality revealed in this drama and the capitalist-friendly character. Methods: The goblin in the drama is a divine being with superpowers. His superpower is often used as a device to show off the power of capital. The place where goblins exercise their superpowers is the rooftop of a large company building they own. Without capital, Kim Shin experiences a lot of inconvenience in living a wonderful life as a transcendent being. As such, in this drama, superpowers and capital are closely connected. Conclusions: The main character of the drama, Kim Shin (Guardian: The Lonely and Great God), is immortalized throughout its millennium history. However, all the characters except the goblin have the limit of being reincarnated. This contrasting aspect of life becomes a metaphor for the class gap as soon as the goblin is revealed to be a capitalist. In the drama, the family of servants serves the goblin, a great-grandchild, as its owner. The loyalty of those who have followed generations is warmly described in the name of “hyo.” Through this narrative, the drama cleverly glorifies class inequality. Viewers unconsciously naturally accept that the class is eternal and that the ability of capital is great, while enjoying the fantasy elements of the drama. In the end, “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” can be said to be a TV drama that glorifies social inequality and has a capitalist-friendly character.
