Objectives: The purpose of this article is to mention the necessity of setting up marine humanities, review research results such as marine literature, marine history, and marine folk studies, and discuss the possibility and significance of marine humanities as an alternative academic research methodology.
Methods: The possibility and significance of marine humanities will be reviewed focusing on literature, history, and folklore, which are highly related to marine humanities, to confirm their goals. I would like to present a new perspective of humanities looking at the ocean through a review of humanities research related to the ocean.
Conclusions: This article discusses the possibility and significance of marine humanities as an alternative academic research methodology. Oceanography and humanities are concepts that cannot be easily joined from a principled level. Research related to the ocean mainly played its role in the natural sciences, a relative area of the humanities. On the other hand, because humanities research has a strong tendency to identify human 靜 and universal values, the nature of marine culture, which has a strong dynamic and relative orientation, is difficult to be illuminated with a humanistic perspective. Therefore, it is necessary to accept the significance and limitations of research related to the ocean that has been conducted in the existing humanities field. Through this, marine humanities can create a new cultural area that overcomes the concept of territorial borders, becoming an academic methodology to overcome conflicts and hierarchies between regions and countries, expand cultural studies through interdisciplinary research, and re-recognize the culture of marine culture revelers who are cultural minorities. In other words, marine humanities can be extended not only to interest in marine-related research topics that have not been noted so far, but also to alternative methodologies that overcome and supplement the problems of modern humanities centered on the continent.
