ABSTRACT

Objectives: Gangwon-do's winter folk cultural heritage can obtain the brand value and economic ripple effect of “Gangwon-do” through the development of tangible and intangible contents. In this article, we would like to examine the aspects and characteristics of winter folk culture in Gangwon-do and discuss ways to strategically utilize it. Methods: So far, 211 Korean folk games have been identified. Among them, there are about six winter games, most of which are representative winter folk games in Gangwon-do. Sledding, hunting, snowball fighting, and wrangling are typical examples. Some of these games are universal nationwide, and the only winter folk games in Gangwon-do are also handed down. Focusing on Gangwon-do, various related records were checked to examine winter folk games in Gangwon-do. Conclusions: Compared to other regions, winter folk games in Gangwon-do have uniqueness, regional identity, and cultural competitiveness. In particular, Pyeongchang, Gangneung, and Jeongseon areas in Gangwon-do have strongly preserved the characteristics of winter folk culture. In the future, it is necessary to preserve and inherit this play as a cultural heritage of Korea, and to highlight it as a key content for regional development.
