ABSTRACT

Objectives: The purpose is to analyze the state of affairs in the motivations for learning Korean language as a second foreign language and interests in K-something (culture/food/ drama et) in some prestigious private university in Kansai area, Japan in the post-COVID-19 era. Methods: A online survey was conducted in April 2023 on all the 1st-year students who chose Korean language classes among others such as Chinese, French, and Germany at Doshisha University in Kyoto. The response rate was significantly high with 75.5 percentage, 954 out of 1264 students. Conclusions: The survey shows that the motivations for choosing Korean language as a second foreign language are not so much result-oriented such as future career and studying aboard as personal interests-driven. As the “2030 (MZ)” generations in Japan have generally strong interests in Korean food and popular culture as is the case with other countries, there is no exception to the case of Year 2023 students in Doshisha University. They prefer to improve listening and speaking skills to reading and writing skills as most of them cease to learn Korean language once they earn enough credits for graduation. Under the circumstances, their goal for 1-2 years mandatory studies are rationally set Intermediate 1, equivalent to TOPIK II (Level 3). Accordingly, they argue that the Korean textbooks themselves and teaching methods should be fit with their goals, namely, learning daily conversations, rather than Korean language tailored for foreign learners.
