ABSTRACT

Objectives This study examines Chinese media responses to Han Kang’s Nobel Prize in Literature, analyzing how her award shaped perceptions of Korean literature and cultural identity in China. It aims to reveal the cultural meanings embedded in official narratives, commercial platforms, and online public discourse. Methods Using discourse analysis and reception theory, the study analyzes texts from national media, commercial outlets, and online communities. It categorizes recurring patterns, compares institutional and popular reactions, and interprets how algorithmic amplification and user-generated discourse construct layered responses to Han Kang’s award. Conclusions Chinese reactions manifested in three patterns: official cultural framing, commercial amplification, and mixed public sentiment. These responses reveal admiration and cultural pride but also competition, fatigue, and caution. The findings show how global literary events mediate regional cultural dynamics and influence transnational perceptions in East Asia.
