AB - This study explores the spatial characteristics and cultural value of K-Retro culture by focusing on Yucheon Village and Sindo Village in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do. These villages preserve modern architectural heritage and everyday life while reinterpreting them as contemporary cultural and tourism resources. Unlike artificially recreated retro spaces, Cheongdo retains authentic historical buildings, including old railway stations, rice mills, theaters, and facilities associated with the Saemaul Movement, thereby offering visitors an immersive experience of Korea’s modern history. The study argues that the combination of spatial upcycling and cognitive placeness enables historical memory to be transformed into meaningful cultural experiences for both domestic and international visitors. Furthermore, Cheongdo demonstrates how retro culture extends beyond nostalgia to become a sustainable model of cultural tourism that integrates regional identity, historical authenticity, and contemporary cultural consumption. The findings suggest that K-Retro can broaden the scope of K-Culture by connecting Korea’s modern heritage with global audiences through experiential and place-based storytelling.
