ABSTRACT

Modernity emerged with a unique way of being ‘the individual’ and ‘the society’. However, with the rapid changes in modern society, the nature of individuals and communities is also changing. This paper explores the possibilities of ‘otaku’, ‘mania’, ‘geekdom’, and ‘tribalism’ as practical and productive communities using the case of local publishing as a new cultural trend in Korean society. These small-scale communities, which have been highlighted for their instantaneous and consumerist tendencies, reflect the will of new members of society to find their own ‘raison d’être’ by breaking away from rigid and uniform life paths. This paper examines the movement of new social members, which has already been revealed through social currents such as Indie culture, DIY, and pro-sumer, from the perspective of ‘tribalism’ and explores the cultural and sociological implications of new communities.
