ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the university life experiences of international students and to provide an in-depth understanding of their adaptation processes. To achieve this, in-depth individual interviews were conducted with seven international students enrolled in degree programs at D University, all of Whom had successfully adapted to university life and continued their studies for more than one year. Each interview was conducted once and lasted approximately 60 to 80 minutes. The data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological research method, following a four-step process. The analysis yielded 73 subcategories and 14 higher-order categories, which were further synthesized into seven core themes: ‘Everyday experiences in university life’, ‘Concerns about academics and the future’, ‘Feeling like a stranger in the university’, ‘Utilization of social support resources’, ‘Psychological support foundations’, ‘Practical advice for other international students’, and ‘Socialization through studying abroad’. This study highlights the lived experiences of international students and emphasizes the need to establish economic and psychological support systems, as well as opportunities to promote better understanding of Korean university life, to aid international students in sustaining their academic journeys.
