ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the perceived necessity of Korean language acquisition among international graduate students in science and engineering programs conducted in English, and examines how linguistic factors influence their employment, settlement, and integration in Korea. The primary data source is a survey of 852 international students from the Ministry of Justice’s commissioned research project, A Study on the Current Status of High-Caliber International Talent and Case Studies in Major Countries for a Comprehensive Reform of the Permanent Residency and Naturalization System for Science and Technology Experts. For the purposes of this study, 542 currently enrolled students with a D-2 (student) visa and 81 graduates with clearly defined visa statuses were selected, totaling 623 respondents. The findings indicate that international graduate students in science and engineering perceive a low necessity for Korean language skills due to the predominance of English in their academic and daily lives, and they tend to prefer an English-centered environment over developing Korean language proficiency. Therefore, to effectively attract and utilize these students as human capital, it is necessary to: motivate Korean language learning prior to their studies in Korea; implement supportive policies to enhance their Korean language proficiency; foster collaboration among the government, industry, and universities to cultivate and utilize international students in science and engineering; and improve the overall quality of this student population.
