ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine how Grice's cooperative principle and Leech's courtesy principle are applied to question-and-answer interactions between teachers and learners in Korean reading classes. To this end, the discussion was developed based on the cooperative principles (quantity, quality, relation, and manner) of pragmatics and the courtesy principle. The main data were audio recordings and transcripts collected from an intermediate reading class (9 sessions, 450 minutes, 21 participants) at a Korean language education institute affiliated with a university in Gyeongnam Province. The analysis results showed that the maxims of quantity and relation increased core concept understanding and topic focus in all stages, and the maxims of authorization and idiomatic maxims strengthened learners’ psychological stability and continued participation through positive feedback and considerate language strategies. When information was insufficient or the topic deviated, the teacher used the maxim of method to clarify the utterance and turned the violation into a learning opportunity. This study deeply analyzed the specific aspects of question-and-answer discourse that occur in reading classes in Korean language education from the perspectives of the principles of cooperation and courtesy, thereby enhancing understanding and providing meaningful practical implications for operating efficient classroom interactions that support the development of learners’ pragmatic ability.
