ABSTRACT

This study examines how Japanese university students’ perceptions of Korea shift in response to specific events: the December 3, 2024, martial law declaration by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and the January 2, 2025, broadcast of the Japanese drama Slow Train. Survey results show that martial law led to a negative shift in perceptions, increasing social distance, while Slow Train had a positive but limited impact. Higher Korean content consumption correlated with more favorable views. The findings suggest that media and political events can rapidly influence perceptions, emphasizing the need for further research on media’s role in cross-cultural understanding.
